This week our APRS-IS server became an official member of the aprs2.net system. The APRS Tier 2 network is now represented in one more country, and this contributes to further stability for the APRS-IS system, linking the APRS world together.
The “original” aprs.net core network is currently made up of six servers, where 2 are down and 2 are “maxed”, leaving only 2 servers for core services. These servers does not have the capacity to provide data streams to all igates and other APRS-IS users.
The APRS Tier 2 network tries to lighten the load on the core servers by providing users with regional servers that can provide a custom data stream for each client.
